About Us

The association World Youth Wave is a group of students and young professionals, with a mission to give young people a chance to express themselves, their thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and connect them on a global level through projects which promote culture and education.

Recognizing the fact that the youth sector is the future bearer of stable democratic societies in the region as well as in the world, and realizing that all present and possible future burning issues can be dealt with only through mutual respect, understanding and learning, an idea of a fresh and enthusiastic organization was born.

World Youth Wave was founded on October 24, 2005, as a non-party, non-governmental and non-profit organisation. The organization was established with the following goals:

  • Strengthening the youth sector in Serbia - promoting and supporting involvement of youth in the Serbian public scene
  • Promoting and encouraging student and youth projects, ideas and experiences in culture and education
  • Improving communication among students and youth in the country and across Europe
  • Setting the basis for a long-term and established co-operation between the participating organizations - promoting closer regional cultural cooperation and inter ethnic dialogue between youth and student NGOs in the different countries of SEE
  • Promoting the values of mutual respect and understanding as well as need to fight against prejudice, racism and xenophobia through processes of cultural exchange and intercultural learning among young people
  • Cooperating and networking with organizations of similar orientation and other relevant institutions in the eve of regional and overall European integration and unification.

When we take a closer look at the concrete situation in the country, unfortunately we have to face the fact that young people are still one of the biggest marginalized groups in Serbian society, without being given chance to participate in the society in a way their European colleagues can. Creating a healthy, well educated and open minded youth is undoubtedly of utmost importance for one nation and represents one of the greatest reasons why a lot of things need to be done urgently to allow for new youth programs. WYW tends to actively take part in all discussions and initiatives which have been agitated in past few years regarding youth issues.

We are registered with the Register of Citizen Organizations/Associations of Ministry for Human and Minority Rights.

NETWORKS

SOrCE Network

It’s hard to say where, when and how it all started - the European Week in Paris has been organized already since 1960. Now the number of such events is constantly growing: the first ISWinT in Timisoara (Romania) took place in 1995; there was a conference called “HEURÉKA” in October 1996 in Pécs, Hungary.

In 1993, the idea for SOrCE (Students Organizing Conventions Everywhere) was born. The aim was to create a base for co-operation, to help each other organizing, to learn from each other.

SOrCE is a loose network - it doesn’t have a leader or a board - SOrCE is where one of it’s members is. The festivals and conferences are completely independent from each other and therefore there are some differences between them, but the basic idea is the same: to meet students from all over the world, to discuss about the one world we are all living in, to get to know different opinions about it, and, last but not least, to have fun and cultural experiences.

Federation of Non-governmental Organizations of Serbia (FeNS)

After the October 2000 events the universal belief was that the social-political situation in Serbia apparently changed for non-governmental organizations, and that bridge of cooperation between the state and the civil sector was finally established. However, the position and the status of non-governmental organizations remained the same, and after many years of endeavoring to establish democracy, non-governmental organizations found themselves without either a clearly defined legislative framework within which to work, or a clearly defined financial and institutional support. As far as the issue of their presentation in public was concerned, not a single step forward was made.

Because of all this, in 2003 a number of non-governmental organizations initiated forming of a network of non-governmental organizations, having realized that only through joint activity by means of this legitimate body, could they improve their working conditions and develop a strategy for survival of this sector in Serbia.

At the annual conference of the Civic Initiatives in February of 2003, the Federation of Non-governmental Organizations of Serbia (Gradjanska inicijativa nevladinih organizacija) (FeNS) was founded.

Today, FeNS comprises 509 member-organizations from 102 municipalities in Serbia.
